Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Kusadasi | Ephesus, House of Virgin Mary

After early morning flight to Izmir you will depart immediatelly to Kusadasi for your Full Day Ephesus Tour.

You will travel south east to Ephesus, passing the Byzantine Fortress at Selcuk, the ruins of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of Ancient World, and St. John’s Basilica. We will enter the magnificent city through the Magnesia Gate and begin a slow, downhill walk with your guide into the ruins of this Roman provincial capital.  The route will take you past the Odeon, the Celsus Library, the Temple of Hadrian, the Fountain of Trajan and the Great Theater. Your guide will tell you about the architectural importance of these sites, as well as historical Roman events that took place there. The Theater had seating for 25,000, was the site where St. Paul preached to the Ephesians, and is used today for a local spring festival.

You will then visit the House of the Virgin Mary, where Mary spent the last days of her life. The house was discovered in the 19th century after the repeated visions of a Catholic nun, Anne Catherine Emmerich, were published in a book. When the ruins of the house were discovered, a small shrine dedicated to St Mary was found there. The Vatican has recognized this small house in the Solmissos Mountains as the final resting place of the Virgin Mary.

Dinner and overnight in Kusadasi. (Lunch, Dinner)

Day 2: Kusadasi | Aphrodisias, Pamukkale

After breakfast at the hotel, we will hit the road for our 3 hour drive towards the city of Denizli, where the famous ancient roman spa of Pamukkale resides.

On our way to Pamukkale, we will first stop at Aphrodisias, the ancient city named after Aprhodite, the Greek goddess of love, who had here her unique cult image. Famous for its quarries and especially for its school of sculptures, it is a site that has relatively been newly excavated. It has become very famous especially in the Roman world.

Pamukkale, which means cotton castle, is truly a unique and spectacular site. Formed over time by the natural hot springs, rich in calcium and carbonate that flow down the slope, this natural beauty has been used as a center for healing and wellness by the ancient Greek and the Romans for centuries. We will also visit the ancient Roman Health Spa of Hierapolis, adjacent to the Pamukkale travertines, made most famous for it is thermal springs, theatre, Agora and the Necropolis.

After the tour, you will be transferred to your hotel. Overnight stay in Kusadasi. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day 3: Kusadasi | Pergamon, Asclepion

Following your breakfast and check out from the hotel, we will move out north to visit the ancient city of Pergamon (also spelled Pergamum), built on a conical hill well above sea level, home to two of Turkey’s most celebrated archaeological sites: Pergamum acropolis, and the medical center of Asclepion. Both are listed among the top 100 historical sites in the Mediterranean. We will see the famed library, the terrace of the spectacularly sited hillside theater, the main palace, and the Altar of Zeus.

Afterwards, we will see the propylaeum of the Temple of Athena. In early Christianity, Pergamum’s church was a major center of the Christian faith, and was one of the Seven Churches of Revelation.

Asclepion (also spelled Asclepium), the birthplace of Galen, was a center of medicine in the ancient world; the teachings of which have dominated Europe from 2nd Century AD up until Renaissance.
