General Information

Because of its strategic position on a small peninsula into the Mediterranean Sea extending from Anatolia, Alanya has been a very important harbor and stronghold for many civilizations during the Middle Ages.

Culture and History

With competing locations such as Olympos, Phaselis and Side, the site of Alanya was not a prime colony during the classical era, although evidence suggests that the area was settled by many civilizations as far bak as the Hittites.

The area gained importance after the growing pirate threat in the Mediterranean. Piracy has pushed cities such as Olympos and Phaselis to eventually leading to their abandonement. The Byzantine Empire, during the 7th century AD, has therefore decided to strengthen its hold on the Mediterranean coast after the fall of its other major harbors, by constructing new fortifications. With the arrival of Seljuk Turks, the city gained even further importance as a shipyard for the empire’s Mediterranean fleet.

Today, Alanya is a beach resort city and a district of the province of Antalya, priding itself with having started the resort tourism in Turkey with the first hotel establishments being built there.
