General Information

Originaly founded by colonists from the island of Lesbos in the 10th Century BC, Assos was an important academic center in the ancient Greek world.

Culture and History

Aristotle, after leaving the Platonic Academy in Athens, has travelled to Assos and founded his own academy in this city. He had to flee to Macedonia after the Persian invasion. Most notably, Assos was also visited by Saint Paul in 56/57 AD during his second mission.

Assos, with its magnificent city fortifications, the archaic Athena Temple, the ruins of the Agora and Ottoman monuments certificates its significance in history.
