...it was the seat of a Byzantine bishop for many years
What is left of the ancient city are the impressive rock sarcophagi.
Fethiye is founded on the remains of ancient Telmessos, a Lycian city bordering Caria.
Culture and History
Famed for its school of diviners and the resting point of Alexander the Great after the siege of Halicarnassos, only little is left of Telmessos today. Years of war, naval looting by Arabian vessels and earthquakes have not been kind to the city, even though it was the seat of a Byzantine bishop for many years.
What is left of the ancient city are the impressive rock sarcophagi, which were carved into the hillside surrounding Fethiye. The protected beach lagoon of Olu Deniz is also an impressive landmark.
