Having once served as the capital of the Ottoman Empire, the city is adorned with 80+ mosques, with Selimiye Mosque being the most prominent, built between 1469-1575, with its unique architecture, from the hands of the great architect Sinan. The powerful central dome, the light-guide, and the four minarets give the structure an impressive sight.
Culture and History
Edirne, or Adrianopolis with its ancient name, has a history that dates back to the 5th Century BCE when it was first founded by the Trachians. For centuries, Edirne has been the scene of major clashes between Eastern and Western civilizations. The town fell under Ottoman rule in 1361.
